Having a mobile home can make things a bit more difficult when you want to remodel certain rooms. One room that is usually more difficult to remodel is the bathroom. When doing a mobile home bathroom remodel there are some tips that you’ll want to consider. Although many of the same methods and techniques of traditional home building and remodeling can be used in a mobile home there are some things that can be different and knowing them is crucial to having a good outcome for your home remodel project.
Much like a mobile home kitchen remodel having a bathroom that needs to be remodeled can be a bit tricky. Most mobile homes are designed with as little space as possible in certain areas simply because most of the designers wanted to save space for larger living rooms and bedrooms. The bathroom is one of the areas where space is at a premium and there may not be much area to work in. For this reason using space saving items can be a huge benefit in a mobile home bathroom remodel project. I’ll go over some tips to get more out of your bathroom below.
How Are Your Plumbing Skills?
Mobile home plumbing can be different in almost every home and manufacturer there is. What may be commonplace in one home can be completely different in another. Having the ability to figure out the plumbing and what needs to be done in a mobile home is crucial since it’s usually different every time. You may experience many different types of plumbing pipe materials as well. For replacement of some plumbing pipe it’s best to use Pex pipe since it’s flexible and can be joined with other types of piping easily with shark bite fittings.
Size Matters in a Mobile Home
If you’re completely removing all the bathroom components and basically starting from scratch make sure to use space saving fixtures. You can buy shallow sinks which have more storage area underneath them and also smaller showers and tubs which can add a few inches of floor space. Carefully laying the bathroom out before you begin re-construction will help you better save space and you’ll also be able to see where the space in your bathroom is going. Saving space while doing a mobile home bathroom remodel is crucial to the project being a success in most cases.
Flooring in the Bathroom
We recently talked with a mobile home owner that had carpet installed in the bathroom. Not only was this a severe problem when it come to mold growth but it also looked hideous. One of the worst types of floor coverings you can install in an area like the bathroom is carpet. It’s simply a breeding ground for mold. Installing ceramic tile may not be a good idea either unless you plan on building up the floor with more stable materials. Since most mobile homes have a single flooring layer it may not be sufficient to handle ceramic tiles. The problem is that the floor will sink slightly causing cracks in the grout which will allow water to pass through. An alternative flooring is luxury vinyl tile flooring which looks amazing and doesn’t suffer from this problem. Luxury vinyl tile flooring has the ability to bend a bit which will naturally happen in most mobile home floors.
